Travel to South Africa - Everything under the sun

South Africa is one of the most varied countries a traveller will encounter in Africa. There's an incredible amount of natural beauty and the country is perfect for travellers with a penchant for adventure. Are you into surfing, diving, trekking and wildlife? Then South Africa is the place for you!

Things to do in South Africa

A quick selection of top attractions for your trip to South Africa might look like this: A road-trip on the 'Garden Route', which takes you past the fishing village of Hermanus. During the right season (from May to December), you can stop to see the awe-inspiring whales. In Simonstown, at Boulder's Beach, you can check out the large colonies of the fascinating African penguins – also known as jackass penguins. See the interesting Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn and Knysna. From Port Elizabeth you can take a day trip to visit a township. Try, for example, the historically interesting Red Location Township. And for goodness sake, do not miss the magnificent Krüger National Park, where you can take a safari adventure to see the exciting wildlife and sleep in a tent on the great savannahs - while hearing the roar of the lions just before you close your eyes...

Cape Town and Table Mountain

The spectacular view from the top of the city's famous Table Mountain is a must for all travellers to the South African legislative capital, Cape Town. For history buffs, a visit to Robben Island, where you can get a fascinating insight into the country's tragic past, is recommended. Nelson Mandela was held prisoner there for 18 years between 1964 and 1982. Of course, there is also Cape Point, where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse on the top of the cliff here has a sublime view that stretches out over the sea.

Durban and The Wild Coast

On the southern coast of Kwazulu-Natal province is South Africa's #1 resort town, Durban. The town is pretty touristy, so it might be worth heading further south down the coast. Durban should be visited to sample its fantastic food; Indian cuisine is especially excellent here. The so-called Wild Coast is good if you want to go on some interesting hikes. Otherwise it is also highly recommended to travel north from Cintsa to the Xhosa villages.

Bungee jump

On the Garden Route you will also find the Bloukrans River. This river offers the ultimate opportunity for adventure: one of the world's highest bungee jumps! The jump from the bridge and down into the depths is 216 meters, so a thrilling experience of a lifetime is guaranteed!

Trekking in South Africa

Between Durban and Johannesburg will find a great place to hike: The Drakensberg Mountains. This region offers many good hiking trails, climbing areas and even horseback riding in the crisp mountain air. You will also find Africa's tallest waterfall (and the world's second highest), Thukela Falls, which has a drop of 947 meters.  A must see!

Wine tasting in South Africa

South Africa is also famous for its wine and the good thing about wine tasting in South Africa is that prices are affordable, even for backpackers. Of course, it helps that you can get some good wines while being able to visit some of South Africa's idyllic vineyards. Try, for example, Groot Constantia, which is the oldest in the country, or either Paarl or Franschhoek Stellenbosh.
